Do England Really Have More Questions Than Answers After Beating Mexico 3-1?

Rio Ferdinand, the new captain, and Ledley King: together an all new central defensive partnership, also found it difficult to adapt to their new roles. The pace of Arsenal’s Vela and Spurs’ Giovanni dos Santos combined leave them on the back foot all too often and Franco looked sharp enough to take advantage. Had any one of that front three gambled on Aguilar’s ball in from the right with ten minutes gone England would have found themselves a goal down.

The story of the first half was not of things going Mexico’s way though, and England took the lead when Peter Crouch’s back post header off a Steven Gerrard corner found King to nod the ball home with 20 minutes gone. That goal was notable as Crouch’s first significant contribution and Steven Gerrard’s first useful pass. Their second came fifteen minutes later when Gerrard’s cross was met by Rooney, parried onto the bar by Perez in the Mexico goal, and handled in by Crouch.

Two goals down going into half time and Mexico could have felt extremly hard done by: Robert Green had made two excellent saves following each of England’s goals and they always looked a potent attacking threat. But that situation never arose as the ever dangerous Franco managed to capitalise on uncertainty in the England defence following a corner and tapped into an empty net right at the ned of first half stoppage time.

Capello, as expected, made changes at half time: Joe Hart, Jamie Carragher and Jermain Defoe replaced Robert Green, Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch. That signalled a subtle shift to 4-4-2, with Rooney moving up front with Defoe, Gerrard moving back into midfield with Carrick, and Milner moving to the left.

That shift can have had little impact on Glen Johnsen’s game-killing, spectacular left-footed goal, scored almost immediately after half time, but it did facilitate England’s improved control of posession. Gerrard in particular looked much more assured in a deeper position and, somewhat dissapointingly, Milner looked much improved playing as a straightforward wideman.

Major second half incidents were hard to come by but Aaron Lennon and Adam son’s seven minute cameos briefly lit up the game. Lennon’s burst past four Mexican defenders should have created a goal, but instead it bought a foul on the edge of the penalty area. Theo Walcott, the man Lennon had come on for, could but watch. Joe Cole should be worried.

Does experience really matter that much ?

One of Fabio Capello’s many dilemmas going into this World Cup has been the emergence of some of his younger squad players as potential starters in South Africa. Some situations have been forced on him through injuries to key players but a few of the rookies have shown potential on their own. Joe Hart, Adam Johnson, and Theo Walcott probably merit selection on their own whereas Leighton Baines and Tom Huddlestone got in through the side door as injuries forced a rethink. Capello naturally prefers veteran players so he has some tough decisions to make.

Many veteran coaches believe that young players don’t win tournaments, except for Alex Ferguson of course, and so when it comes to crunch time, youngsters usually get to sit on the bench during the important games. Older players usually have more competition experience and especially when pressure mounts, coaches would rather go with tried and trusted talent.

However, over the years, many young stars have emerged at World Cups without much prior exposure and have gone on to become world stars. Pele was a raw 17 year old in 1958 in Sweden when he helped his country win the World Cup that year. He was somewhat of a star back home already in Brazil, and probably is an exception rather than the rule. Michael Owen was 18 years old when he set the football world alight in 1998 with that famous goal for England against Argentina.

Beckham to present 2018 bid book

David Beckham will deliver England’s Bid Book for the FIFA World Cup™ 2018/2022 to FIFA President Sepp Blatter in Zurich on Friday 14th May.

Beckham will lead the England 2018 delegation at FIFA House where all countries competing for the FIFA World Cup for 2018 and 2022 are scheduled to hand over the documents which outline the vision and technical details of the bids.

Beckham last met Blatter in Cape Town at the FIFA World Cup™ 2010 draw in December last year.

Football Association and England 2018 Chairman David Triesman said: “It is fantastic news that David’s schedule has enabled him to present and head our bid in Zurich. “It is entirely appropriate that he does so as our bid is about football and the passion for it in our country. Nobody represents that better than David. He is a fantastic footballer and global role model.”

The full line-up for England’s five person official delegation will be confirmed later this week.

Rooney key for England

Hurst: Rooney key for England

Sir Geoff Hurst believes Wayne Rooney is "the one player that England cannot afford to be without" if they are to have a realistic chance of winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ this summer.

England's hat-trick hero of 1966 feels Rooney has been at the peak of his powers this season, but the former West Ham star warned it is of paramount importance to keep the Manchester United star fit for the duration of the tournament.

"Rooney is the one player that England cannot afford to be without," Hurst told Press Association Sport. "Wayne, with the season he has had for Manchester United and England, needs to be playing. That would certainly be the case for the latter part of the tournament. You could get away with it in the early rounds, maybe, but to win it, you need your best players for the latter stages.

"He gives you that x-factor. He is one of the top players in the world now. He is at his peak and that is hard to replace. You can't replace great players playing at their best. It is impossible," he added.

Hurst also backed Rooney to lead the line on his own if necessary. "I think there is a strong case for playing Rooney up front on his own like he does for United," he said. "I am not sure whether he could have done that a couple of years ago but he has proved he can do it and score goals."

Blunder leaves Crouch with two left feet‎

The Sun reports that the Tottenham striker was caught out after his girlfriend Abbey Clancy packed his bag for last month's friendly against Egypt with two left shoes.

The 29-year-old realised his girlfriend's mistake just before he boarded the team bus headed for Wembley and was forced to ask aides to rummage through lost property bins in the hope of finding a pair of matching size 12s.

Fortunately for the 6'7" goal ace, they came up trumps and he was able to comply with England coach Fabio Capello's strict smart dress code for the trip.

A source told The Sun: "Peter was pleased when Abbey offered to give him a hand. She's very thoughtful, so she said she would take care of packing his outfit to travel to the stadium in.

"He didn't think much more of it until he tried to slip his shoes on - and noticed a problem. Abbey had packed him two left shoes. He rang down to reception to see if they had anything suitable for him to wear from their lost property department.

"Finding size 12s is a tall order, but surprisingly they did manage to find him a pair. So Peter managed to look as smart as his team-mates for the big match."

Crouch was on target twice against the Egyptians as England ran out 3-1 winners as part of their preparations for the summer's World Cup in South Africa. The World Cup 2010 tickets of all matches are now available for sale.

World Cup in 3D events planned by Sony

Sony, the owner of the 3D TV rights to the 2010 World Cup football finals, has announced that it is preparing a number of events in the UK and in Germany where matches from the World Finals will be screened in 3D.

In Germany and the UK, the broadcasters with the TV rights for the competition do have 3D broadcast capabilities, so in order to bring live 3D football to fans, Sony is planning to show the live matches in 3D at special events around the two countries.

In the UK, it is anticipated that around fifty venues such as cinemas, will be showing the matches.

However, it seems that for the England fans there may be a problem, as FIFA only announced last week that England group stage games would not be in 3D!
