Bridge turns his back on England

Manchester City left-back Wayne Bridge has said he does not want to be considered for selection by England.

The news means that Fabio Capello will not be able to include the former Southampton and Chelsea defender in his squad for this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.

Bridge has made his decision after a relationship between his former partner Vanessa Perroncel and Chelsea and England defender John Terry became public knowledge.

Although Capello stripped Terry of the England captaincy, Bridge has said his place in the squad has become "untenable and potentially divisive".

It is a major blow for England as first-choice left-back Ashley Cole is currently injured and Bridge was expected to replace him in next Wednesday's friendly international against Egypt.

The 29-year-old issued a statement which read: "It has always been an honour to play for England.

"However, after careful thought, I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.

"I have thought long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting and events over the last few weeks.

"It has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful thought I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.

"Sadly therefore I feel for the sake of the team and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection.

"I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa."

Where Does Joe Cole’s Future Lie?

Its funny. Four years ago, heading into Germany for the 2006 World Cup, we were convinced Lampard and Gerrard were the two best midfielders in the world (they’d come second and third at the 2005 Ballon d’or). They both misfired at the World Cup, spawning what we now think of historically as the Lampard/Gerrard Problem. The one midfielder who really did turn it on in Germany was Joe Cole.

Its funny then, that the sacrificial lamb in the England Midfield debate would appear to be Joe Cole – as Gerrard is currently playing left and Lampard through the centre. As great as it is to see Lampard and Gerrard play (relatively well) together, it is a great dissapointment to see Cole sidelined.

Of course, he has been injured of late, and is only just coming back to fitness. He hasn’t been getting alot of game time at Chelsea, which with his contract running out has begged the question as to where his future lies, for club and for country.

The Terry Affair: John Terry removed as captain of England’s soccer team

LONDON — John Terry was dropped as England’s soccer captain by coach Fabio Capello on Friday, a week after allegations became public that the defender had an affair with the former girlfriend of teammate Wayne Bridge.

Rio Ferdinand will take over as captain as England prepares for its World Cup opener against the United States on June 12. Ferdinand, who had been vice captain, has been injured for much of this season.

Capello told Terry of the decision in a brief meeting at Wembley Stadium, a week after the married Chelsea star lost a High Court battle to ban publication of details of an alleged relationship with Vanessa Perroncel, the mother of Bridge’s child.

“After much thought, I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry,” Capello said in a statement. “As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behavior. However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of theEngland squad. What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice.”

The 29-year-old Terry had been appointed captain by Capello in August 2008. Given the prominence of soccer in England, the closest equivalent in the United States would involve the Olympic basketball team.

“I fully respect Fabio Capello’s decision,” said Terry, who remains as Chelsea’s captain. “I will continue to give everything forEngland.”

Bundesliga chief executive officer Christian Seifert, in Miami for Sunday’s Super Bowl, praised Capello’s move.

“The closer you get to the World Cup, the more nervous the situation in each country,” he said. “I think it was good to make a fast decision.”

Also Friday, Perroncel said she will not accept media offers to sell her story.

“I have a 3-year-old son, and he is my main concern,” the French model said.

Her spokesman, Max Clifford, said “Vanessa would also like to add that she finds it very sad that John Terry has been dropped asEngland captain.”

Ferdinand, a 31-year-old Manchester United central defender, has played in just four of England’s last 12 matches. He missed the 2004 European Championship while serving an eight-month suspension for failing to show up for a drug test at United’s training ground and is serving a four-game ban at the club level for elbowing Hull’s Craig Fagan.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, also slowed by injuries this season, will move up to vice captain.

“When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice captain and also named a third choice. There is no reason to change this decision,” Capello said. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the FA, particularly Lord David Triesman and Ian Watmore for allowing me to make this decision in my own time and in the best interest of the team.”

England’s next game is a home exhibition against African champion Egypt on March 3. A big challenge for Capello is figuring out whether Terry can be on the same team as Bridge, who is Ashley Cole’s backup at left back.

Bridge is set to return for Manchester City on Saturday at Hull after two months out with a knee injury. City manager Roberto Mancini told Capello’s assistant Franco Baldini earlier this week that Bridge is going through a time tough, but is ready to play.

“I said it is not a good moment in his head, but it’s not a problem on the training ground,” Mancini said. “It’s important he can play now and not think about the other person.”

Fabio Capello alone will make the decision about John Terry’s position.

The FA confirms that England manager Fabio Capello alone will make the decision about John Terry’s position.

An FA spokesman said: "Fabio is fully up to speed with developments regarding John Terry. He spoke with our Chairman Lord Triesman and Chief Executive Ian Watmore today, who both backed him to make the best decision for England on footballing grounds. Fabio is dealing with the matter in his own way using his extensive experience as a football manager."

Fabio Capello returns to England later this week and will travel to Warsaw for the Euro 2012 qualifying competition draw this weekend.
