The England goalkeeping position is among the most contentious battles. Regular keeper David James has struggled with injury problems and has rarely featured for relegation threatened Portsmouth so far this season. He has also been linked with a move away from Fratton Park during the January transfer window with former Pompey boss Harry Redknapp believed to be particularly keen to add the veteran goalkeeper to his squad at Spurs.
Not only does James therefore face the problem of recovering from injury and rediscovering the impressive form that won him the England gloves in the first place, but if he is to move to Tottenham he first has the task of dislodging the rejuvenated Heurelho Gomes to become number one at White Hart Lane.
Should he fail to re-establish himself then Capello is likely to call upon West Ham's Robert Green to fill the void, but his credentials have already come under intense scrutiny from fans. Green also became the first England keeper in history to be sent off when he was dismissed for a professional foul in the penultimate game of England's qualification and while he is a solid Premier League keeper he is still widely considered to lack the quality required to head England's bid for glory this summer.

Elsewhere, Manchester United stopper Ben Foster has fallen further down the pecking order at Old Trafford following numerous inept performances and has left England looking particularly short between the sticks.
Joe Hart could provide a potential glimmer of light. His inspirational performances have been paramount to Birmingham's overachievement in the Premier League and he is certainly one of the season's major success stories thus far. At the age of twenty-two and with just one full cap to his name Capello may deem the youngster to lack the necessary experience to warrant a starting berth, but if he can maintain his current level of form he would certainly get my vote.

Robert Green for England
Robert Paul Green (born 18 January 1980 in Chertsey, Surrey) is an English professional footballer who currently plays his club football for West Ham United in the English Premier League and internationally for England as a goalkeeper.
Green came through the youth ranks at Norwich City and made his first team debut on 11 April 1999 keeping a clean sheet in the 0-0 local derby draw against Ipswich Town at Carrow Road, first-team opportunities were restricted by the presence of first-choice goalkeeper Andy and it was not until Marshall's departure in the summer of 2001 that Green was able to establish himself as first choice goalkeeper for Norwich. In August 2006, Norwich accepted a bid of up to £2,000,000 from West Ham United for Green, who had made 241 appearances for Norwich between 1999 and 2006.
Ticket4football provides the fans with the easiest way to get their England world cup tickets online.
In the 2007–08 season season for West Ham United, Green saved the first three penalties taken against him. The first, against Kevin Doyle of Reading, the second, Benjani of Portsmouth in injury time, the third from Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe, again in injury time. The streak was ended by James McFadden of Birmingham on 9 February 2008. He played in every match and was named the West Ham Hammer of the Year with the Irons finishing in a respectable 10th place in the Premiership.
In 2008-2009 season Green saved yet another penalty this time on 30 August 2008 against Jason Roberts of Blackburn Rovers, West Ham then went on to win the game 4-1. Green played all 38 league games for West Ham in season 2008-09 keeping 10 clean sheets. So far, he is going good for England.

Wayne Rooney: Playmaker & Poacher
Despite his many many goals for England (25 in 57 appearances so far) I don’t really think of Wayne Rooney as a goalscorer. That sounds insane, I know. But it’s not that I doubt Rooney’s ability to put ball in net, it’s more that he does so much else that I tend to think of him more as a creator or a playmaker, than an out and out goal-getting striker. If you read this blog regularly, you’re probably already bored of me banging on about how important it is for Rooney to play in the hole behind the target man, where he room to make things happen.
But this weekend Roonaldo scored all four as Man Utd beat Hull 4-0 and, as you can see above, all four were pretty much poachers goals. That is, goals based on goalscoring instinct, positioning, well timed runs. That kind of thing. Seems he’s a playmaker and a poacher. The boy can do it all.
All of which underscores just how important Rooney is going to be for us at World Cup 2010. If anything happens to Rooney (metatarsals?) then we can have someone else wear his shirt, but we can’t replace him.

Fabio Capello’s First England Lineup
The media is out in force covering tonight’s game, and we have a (preliminary) squad for tonight’s match:
Goalkeeper: David James (Portsmouth)
Right Back: Wes Brown (Man Utd)
Centre Back: Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd)
Centre Back: Matthew Upson (West Ham)
Left Back: Ashley Cole (Chelsea)
Right Winger: David Bentley (Blackburn)
Central Midfield: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
Central Midfield: Owen Hargreaves (Man Utd)
Left Winger: Ashley Young (Aston Villa)
Support Striker: Joe Cole (Chelsea)
Striker: Wayne Rooney (Man Utd)
Initial thoughts: I can understand selecting David James in goal – he’s the in-form English keeper at the moment – but I would have liked to see one of the younger keepers, ideally Scott Carson, given the opportunity to play. Playing Matthew Upson and Wes Brown as part of the first-choice back four is an interesting decision, but the latter makes a great deal of sense: Brown plays right-back for the best defence in the Premiership, and does so alongside Rio Ferdinand. The alternative – Micah Richards – has been playing at centre back for the entirity of this season, and so playing him at right-back makes little sense. As for Matthew Upson, I’m skeptical, but expect to be proved wrong.
The midfield looks beautiful – I’m really looking forward to seeing it in action tonight. Up front, it will be fascinating to see Joe Cole in the support-striker role, since he hasn’t really played in that position since joining Chelsea. He seems more suited to that role than that of a left winger, and this could be Capello’s first masterstroke.

England’s National Football Centre Will Now Be Named “St. George’s Park”
Remember the National Football Centre? The facility in Burton-upon-Trent (centrally located) that was supposed to be England’s answer to France’s Clairefontaine? Well, after a bit of a hiatus, the facility has been renamed St. George’s Park and looks to be happening again.
The centre is intended as both a training base for all England teams (senior, under 21 etc) as well as the place where all coaching education happens, and the future HQ of the League Manager’s Association.
Here’s what the FA say will be there:
The Park’s facilities will comprise 12 full-size football pitches including one synthetic pitch and one full-size indoor facility along with a multi-purpose sports hall.
The site will feature a 150-bed four star hotel, an 80-bed three star hotel, a regional conference facility, banqueting suite, training and seminar rooms, including a 90-seat lecture theatre and modern digitally equipped library.
Housed on the site will be a flexible indoor sports hall with facilities for Futsal, partially sighted football, 12 badminton courts and a state-of-the-art full size indoor pitch. Linking the buildings will be players’ changing facilities, a cutting-edge gymnasium and hydrotherapy suite with accompanying sports medicine and sports science facilities.
All very nice. But the really big change is that the centre will now include a housing development as well as a hotel, which should alleviate some of the FA’s and Umbro’s costs.
Obviously this centre is looooooong overdue. France’s World Cup win which somewhat inspired the idea was back in 1998. Twelve years ago. But we’re still in the planning stage, and I’m not 100% sure about the name change to St. George’s Park. I know it’s patriotic, but it’s not very subtle is it? Think I preferred the National Football Centre.
Then again, rebranding is everything. So if that’s what it takes to get his damn thing built the I say let’s go for it.

Can England Play Algeria Now Please?
England’s World Cup Group C opponents Algeria were in action vs Malawi in the Africa Cup of Nations today. As you can see above, it did not go well.
Algeria went into the game very much as favourites, but ended as 3-0 losers. Disastrous defending for the first goal. And the third. Malawi blogger Sscouser was understandably happy with the result. Algeria blogger Omar not so much.
Any chance we can play our 2010 World Cup game against Algeria tonight instead of in June? Because surely they can only get better from here.

David Beckham makes winning return for AC Milan
Watched by England coach Fabio Capello, Beckham impressed on the right side of a three-man attack in his first game since beginning a second loan spell.
"I was happy with the game and happy with the win and it's just great to be back," Beckham, 34, said.
"It's important that I work hard and perform well and I felt that I did that, but it's just one game."
Injuries to Alexandre Pato and Clarence Seedorf meant Beckham, who is on loan from LA Galaxy, played further forward than usual.
"That is the synthesis of what he is about. He has an absolute willingness to help," said Milan coach Leonardo.
"He had a week where we tried him in every role. He has extraordinary quality and tactical intelligence."
The midfielder only discovered after the match that Capello had returned to his former club to check on his progress.
He also says : "No, I didn't desperately want to take it," said Beckham of the third penalty.
"To be honest, I think it's always important that the penalty taker always takes the penalties and that's why I gave the ball back to Ronaldinho.
"But then he gave it to Klaas and he took it, but it's not important."
AC Milan are eight points behind leader Inter Milan, with a game in hand.
Jose Mourinho's side earlier ground out a 1-0 over Chievo thanks to a goal by Mario Balotelli.
But the game was overshadowed by an injury to Inter defender Cristian Chivu, who suffered a fractured skull in a clash of heads.
The Romanian spent nearly an hour in surgery to relieve a haematoma and take out bone fragments.
"Everything went normally and therefore we are quite confident the patient can recover without problems," doctor Sergio Turazzi said in a statement.

England avoid difficult World Cup teams in draw
England's bid for 2010 Football World Cup glory was given a big boost at the draw when they avoided most of the big names and were placed with USA, Algeria and Slovenia.
England Fixtures
Saturday, June 12 2010
19.30 England - USA Royal Bafokeng Stadium
Friday, June 18 2010
19.30 England - Algeria Green Point Stadium
Wednesday, June 23 2010
15.00 Slovenia - England Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
England coach Fabio Capello said that Spain and Brazil were England's biggest threat in the world cup.
"If you want to win then you have to play the great sides but I have confidence in my team," Capello said on the sidelines of England presenting its bid for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup.
"We have played all the top teams. For me, Spain is good and Brazil is very, very good."
"But I think the teams from Africa could surprise. I saw Ivory Coast and they really surprised me. And Cameroon are one of the best teams from the continent."
England are expected to base themselves in Rustenburg, about two hours drive from Johannesburg, for the tournament from June 11-July 11 next year although Capello is concerned about the quality of the training pitches there.
"The pitches at the grounds are very good and the facilities are fantastic, but the training pitches are not great. But we have time," he said.
"Rustenburg is one of our options."
If England win their group, they could play Ghana, Australia or Serbia in the second round but if they finish runners-up a probable meeting with Germany awaits.
Speaking after the World Cup draw had been released David Beckham said, "It's always good to be seeded and be up there with the best teams in the world but in the World Cup it's not about staying away from certain teams."
"If you want to go all the way in the competition you have to come up against them at some point." he told the Press Association.
"You are going to have to beat the best teams and the best players, so it doesn't really matter when you come up against them."

Welcome to 2010 England Fans
No time for a big “review of 2009″ type post. Except to say that 2009 was a brilliant year to be an England fan. Especially compared to 2008. Shudder.
I know this England team still has certain weaknesses (Glen Johnson’s knee injury has me worried about our options at rightback again) but I’m still thrilled that we look like a team with a plan.
Wayne Rooney looks lethal in an England shirt, Gerrard and Lampard can play together, and we’ve got pacy options down the wing. Masssive massive thumbs up for Fabio Capello and an excellent World Cup qualification campaign the undoubted highlight. Happy days.
Here’s hoping 2010 is just as impressive, and that we put in a good showing at a certain little tournament in South Africa.

Watmore- Capello here for long term
Football Association chief executive Ian Watmore expects Fabio Capello to remain as England boss until after Euro 2012.
There is already plenty of speculation that Capello will stand down once the Three Lions return from the World Cup in the summer. Fulham boss Roy Hodgson is widely viewed as a leading contender to replace the Italian, a belief that has only been fuelled by the 62-year-old's decision to sign a new rolling contract with the Craven Cottage club, which includes a release clause.
"Reports linking Roy Hodgson or any manager with the England job post the World Cup are just not true," said Watmore.
"We expect Fabio Capello to remain in the post for the duration of his contract, which runs through to the summer of 2012.
"Fabio Capello has also made it clear that he expects to continue in the role after the World Cup and throughout the Euro 2012 campaign."
Capello has already arranged a friendly with Egypt at Wembley on March 3 in preparation for the Algeria encounter in Cape Town on June 18.
Negotiations are ongoing with Mexico about meeting up at Wembley in May as Capello views them as the ideal opponents for the opening game against the United States.
England will conclude their pre-tournament build-up with an altitude training camp in Austria that is set to end against Japan before the Three Lions head to their base in Rustenburg at the beginning of June.

Sven-Göran Eriksson
Sven-Göran Eriksson took charge of the team between 2001 and 2006 and was the first non-English manager of England. Despite controversial press coverage of his personal life, Eriksson was consistently popular with the majority of fans and England enjoyed some success with top qualifying place in two World Cup tournaments and Euro 2004, losing only five competitive matches during his tenure and rising to a (joint) record FIFA No.4 world ranking for the English national team during the 2006 World Cup under his guidance. Eriksson's contract was extended by The FA by two years to include Euro 2008 prior to being terminated by them at the conclusion of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Steve McClaren was appointed as the head coach following the 2006 World Cup. The reign was marked with little success, with England failing to qualify for the 2008 European Championships. McClaren left on 22 November 2007, after only 16 months in charge and making him the shortest tenured full time England manager ever since the inauguration of the post in 1946. He was replaced on 14 December 2007 by the former Real Madrid and AC Milan manager Fabio Capello. The Italian is the second foreign manager to coach England, after Eriksson, and took charge of his first game on 6 February 2008 against Switzerland. England won 2–1. England have enjoyed more success under Capello, having won all but one of their qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup. A 5-1 victory over Croatia at Wembley Stadium ensured the team qualified for the final tournament with two games to spare, a feat that has never been achieved before.
